Opening Eyes

The Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program is a vision and eye health screening in partnership with the Lions Clubs International Foundation. Opening Eyes is able to provide prescription eyewear, sunglasses, and sports goggles to Special Olympics athletes under the direction of volunteer vision care professionals. The screening process takes approximately 30–45 minutes, with athletes rotating through various testing stations and are educated on proper vision care.

Screening Process

  • Vision check (far and near)
  • Color vision
  • Stereo (3D) vision
  • Eye alignment and muscle movement
  • Eye pressure
  • Front of the eye and inside the eye evaluation.

Every athlete who needs vision correction is provided with a free pair of glasses and/or sports goggles. Once the athletes screening take place, and their prescription glasses are shipped one to two months later.
