Special Olympics Nevada (SONV) Health programming introduces the Mindset Matters program to students, parents, school administrators, teachers, counselors, supportive staff, licensed paraprofessionals, and youth organizations in Nevada communities. The program utilizes some aspects of the Strong Minds program, in addition to new elements from the 8-Dimensions of Wellness Model, the Together Counts Program, and evidence-based activities to teach Nevada students adaptive coping skills and strategies to maintain emotional wellness. The Mindset Matters program can be adapted for any age group and ability. Topics include:
- Emotion identification and regulation
- Relaxation breathing
- Cognitive restructuring
- Muscle relaxation: Yoga and stretching
- Mindfulness and interpersonal relationships
- Social wellness and social skills.
The program will provide schools and community organizations with the resources and materials they need to integrate an emotional wellness program to address the growing rates of mental health concerns in the Nevada community. The unmet mental health needs of children and adolescents pose a challenge to the success of our youth. Rates of mental health concerns, including depression and psychological stress, have been increasingly rising, but students in Nevada receiving support remain disproportionately small.
